What to do if it rains on your wedding day….

So you’ve spent months and months planning your wedding and had full control over every little detail that makes up your day. The only thing out of your control is our Great British weather! So what do you do if it rains on your wedding day? Here’s my advice to brides and grooms and how to deal with a little rain on the biggest day of your life….

First of all, if you’re getting married in the summer months, it very rarely rains all day. You usually will get a window of opportunity at some point and when you do, you’ve just got to grab it with both hands and get some shots outdoors. The winter months are different, as the sun can set as early as 4pm in December, not leaving us with a lot of daylight to play with. However if you are getting married in the winter months and it does decide to rain all day, then don’t panic because this can be a GOOD thing (Trust me!).

Now as a wedding photographer, I’m always prepared for every eventuality. I always carry a large white umbrella, a clean bath towel, a spare shirt and some plastic food bags. What a strange combination I hear you say? Well let me explain.

Once the sun goes down and if it’s still raining, I will always try and get couples to embrace the rainy weather. I always insist that they have the umbrella, in order to keep dry (I usually get soaked!). I then put a towel down on the floor to keep the bride’s dress dry and finally the food bags go over my flash units and keep them dry. We’re now ready to create some MAGIC. Here’s a few examples of wedding photos I’ve captured when it’s been pouring down, proving that a little rain can actually be a good thing on your wedding day….
