On the Street Where You Live

I was commissioned by the Darlington Hippodrome Theatre, for their project ‘On the street where you live’.  For this project, I had to engage with the Theatre’s local residents and businesses on Parkgate and Borough Road, to create a multimedia exhibition capturing people in their own personal setting. I went into each neighbouring business and informed them about the project and asked if they would like to be a part of it. Most of the people were very accommodating and I took a variety of portraits, including Daphne a cafe owner, who had served a host of visiting celebrities who had played at the Hippodrome. A cobbler whose family had traded on the street since the 1960’s. A barmaid from the Black Swan pub, a local resident who drank in the Greyhound pub and had performed on stage at the Hippodrome and many others. The exhibition was installed in the Theatre’s new Heritage gallery in March 2018. This project was an important part of the Hippodrome’s heritage engagement plans and helped develop their relationship with both local residents and local businesses.
